“Atapco, in coordination with Equinox Investments, formed East Gate Partners, which represents East Gate Marketplace, Loudoun County’s first green shopping center.

Florida has a great deal at stake when it comes to climate change. With their long coastlines, low elevation, and frequent proximity to tropical storms and hurricanes, Floridians could face flooding and other dangers as global warming continues. In a recent survey, half of the Floridians asked believed global warming will be a greater problem for their state than the rest of the continental United States.

It’s with good reason, then, that in July of 2007, Florida Governor Charlie Crist signed the state’s first ever Executive Order to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Among a variety of new climate-friendly ordinances, the Order mandates that all new state buildings be energy efficient and employ solar panels when possible. Furthermore, all new state cars should be energy efficient, using ethanol and biofuels when available.

Energy

We are also incorporating energy conservation measures into our planning for other official Convention venues. At the Pepsi Center media pavilions, we are selecting high-efficiency lighting systems and using compact fluorescent, LED and solar powered lighting wherever possible. We hope to include solar arrays to assist with clean power needs. In areas where generators will absolutely be required, our goal is to fuel them by a minimum of 20 percent biodiesel.

The Pepsi Center has also been working independently to institute long-term sustainability measures on site. The Pepsi Center is installing a permanent solar array that will be operational before the Convention and long after our nominee has been chosen in Denver. In conjunction with the Pepsi Center, as well as the Convention Center and Hyatt Regency Headquarters Hotel, a percentage of the power supplied to these venues will be 100% powered by wind energy through Green-e certified renewable energy credits.

The Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries made the announcement on July 21. Nearly 54 billion aluminum cans were recycled in 2007, about two billion more than in the previous year.

Recycling cans saves energy, said Robert Budway, president of the Can Manufacturing Institute. He told Business Wire recycling 40 aluminum beverage cans has the energy-saving equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. During 2007, Americans recycled enough aluminum cans to conserve the energy equivalent of over 15 million barrels of oil.

Aluminum cans are the most recycled beverage container in the U.S. and can be recycled indefinitely.
